Federal Skilled Trades Program

The Canadian Federal Skilled Trades program aims to target workers qualified in a skilled trade by offering them the opportunity to become permanent residents of Canada.

Skilled trades for FSTW program are organized under these groups of the National Occupation classification (NOC):

  • Industrial, electrical and construction trade
  • maintenance and equipment operation trades
  • supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
  • processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
  • chefs and cooks
  • butchers and bakers

Educational Requirements

There is no educational requirement for the Federal Skilled Trades program.
However, having a Canadian certificate, degree or diploma or an Educational Credential Assessment report for equivalent qualification from your home country, will add points to your Express Entry profile.

To be able to qualify for Federal Skilled Trades program in Canada, you would need to:

  • Have at least 2 years of full-time experience in a skilled trade or an equivalent experience in part-time. You must have acquired this experience within the last 5 years from the date of the application and after certification to practice the trade has been granted in your country of residence
  • Have a valid full-time offer of employment for at least 1 year or a certificate of qualification in your skilled trade, issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority
  • Have the minimum score of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking and listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing. You must have taken the approved language test within the last 2 years from the date of Permanent Residence application submission
  • Intend living outside of the province of Quebec
  • Be admissible in Canada
  • Show that you have enough funds to support yourself and your family to settle in Canada unless you are currently able to legally work in Canada or have a valid job offer from an employer in Canada
